Join us for a day of hands-on, deep learning about the scientific and cultural legacy of Rachel Carson, author of the book Silent Spring, which often credited as sparking America’s environmental movement in the 1960s. We will spend the day performing biological and chemical tests to measure the pollution index of local streams, discussing the intersection of science and culture, searching for evidence of bioaccumulation of pesticides or other pollutants in our local environment, and tackling the controversy surrounding Rachel Carson’s legacy. Students will experience a day in the life of a field biologist and will form an opinion on the ethics of mixing scientific evidence with emotive writing.
