Camp Manager - Yunasa

Full-Time, Exempt | Pasadena, CA | Year-Round | $73,000–$85,000

ABOUT IEA

The Institute for Educational Advancement (IEA) is a national nonprofit headquartered in Pasadena, CA, dedicated to helping gifted and neurodiverse young people identify and develop their full potential. Through enrichment, scholarship, and summer camp programs, IEA creates opportunities for young people to grow intellectually, socially, and personally.

IEA is seeking an experienced and highly organized Camp Manager to provide year-round leadership for Camp Yunasa, IEA’s residential summer camp program for gifted youth.

Reporting to IEA’s President and Senior Program Manager, the Camp Manager will lead the planning, development, staffing, and implementation of Yunasa’s two (2) one-week residential summer camp experiences. This position will ensure that camp programming reflects IEA’s mission, values, and commitment to the well-being and development of gifted young people.

The Camp Manager will be based at IEA’s Pasadena headquarters throughout the year and will travel to camp locations during the summer. Throughout the year, the Camp Manager will also contribute to other IEA programs including Academy, Explore, PUSD Innovation Clubs, events, and organizational initiatives as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Camp Leadership & Program Development

  • Partner with the Senior Program Manager to provide year-round leadership for Yunasa from pre-camp planning through post-camp evaluation.
  • Develop and implement high-quality residential programming that reflects IEA’s mission and supports the intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, physical, and personal development of gifted young people.
  • Establish annual camp goals, priorities, timelines, and operational plans.
  • Evaluate camper and staff experiences and use feedback to strengthen the program.
  • Help shape the future growth and development of Yunasa, including the transition to new camp locations as needed.

Staff Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, on-board, train, supervise, and evaluate seasonal camp staff.
  • Build and lead a strong, mission-aligned team of counselors, leadership staff, fellows, and other seasonal personnel.
  • Develop and lead annual staff training and orientation.
  • Set clear expectations for staff conduct, camper supervision, communication, boundaries, and professionalism.
  • Coach and support staff while addressing performance concerns as needed.

Camper & Family Experience

  • Oversee the camper experience from application and enrollment through post-camp follow-up.
  • Collaborate with IEA staff to understand camper needs and make appropriate support and staffing decisions that address camper concerns thoughtfully and in accordance with IEA policies.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for significant camper or family concerns during camp and maintain timely, and professional communication with families.

Safety, Risk Management & Compliance

  • Lead camp safety and risk-management practices in collaboration with IEA leadership and camp-site partners.
  • Support IEA’s preparation for and ongoing work toward American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, site policies, IEA policies, and ACA standards as applicable.
  • Develop and implement emergency and crisis-response procedures.
  • Ensure required staff training and certifications are maintained, including CPR/First Aid.

Operations & Administration

  • Manage the annual camp calendar, planning deadlines, logistics, and onsite operations.
  • Coordinate transportation, lodging, meals, supplies, equipment, program materials, and vendors.
  • Develop and monitor the Yunasa operating budget in collaboration with IEA leadership.
  • Maintain strong relationships with camp host sites and external partners.
  • Serve as IEA’s primary day-to-day camp lead onsite at each residential camp session, in coordination with the Senior Program Manager and other IEA leadership.

Recruitment & Organizational Collaboration

  • Support outreach and recruitment efforts to attract qualified campers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with IEA communications and development staff on camp marketing, outreach, and fundraising materials.
  • Represent Yunasa and IEA professionally with families, schools, partner organizations, camp sites, and the broader gifted education community.
  • Participate in IEA events, committees, and organizational initiatives as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3–5 years of progressive experience in residential camping, youth programming, outdoor education, education, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience preferably including recruiting, training, supervising, evaluating, and mentoring staff.
  • Experience with camp safety, risk management, emergency procedures, and/or ACA accreditation preferred.
  • Experience working with gifted and twice-exceptional children or adolescents and/or social-emotional learning and mindfulness is a plus.
  • Strong organizational, project-management, communication, and interpersonal skills, with excellent judgment and the ability to remain calm and decisive in challenging situations.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Comfort working in an outdoor residential camp environment and engaging directly with campers, their parents, counselors, and staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn organizational databases and other technology systems.
  • Ability to meet all applicable background checks, licensing, campsite, and IEA, and certification requirements, including CPR/First Aid.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for working with young people and a passion for creating meaningful camp experiences.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This role involves physical activity such as standing and walking for extended periods, including outdoors and on uneven terrain, stairs, and hills, participating in camp activities, assisting with setup and breakdown and occasionally lifting or carrying supplies or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for short distances, with or without assistance.

COMPENSATION

The salary range is $73,000 – $85,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications with a generous benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement contributions and allowances for travel. IEA offers a comprehensive benefits package and reimburses required business travel expenses.
